Activities/Attractions: Bar Harbor has been a "destination resort" for over 150 years. Although summer is the most popular season, the area is a magnificent place in fall, winter and spring. There are a wide variety of outdoor activities for all levels of "rusticators".
From the town's piers "set sail" on a friendship sloop, or larger schooner; cruise the harbor on a nature cruise and see bald eagles, ospreys, harbor porpoises and seals in their natural habitats; or motor out 15 miles to see the Atlantic Puffin or 30 miles out to see one of the earth's most magnificent creatures-the whale (four species are common & the ships guarantee sightings). The island is also home to more than 50 fine restaurants.
But the crown jewel of our island is Acadia National Park. Acadia was formed from land donated by benefactors like John D. Rockefeller Jr., who constructed a 57 mile web of crushed gravel carriage roads ideal for hiking, biking or taking a horse-drawn carriage ride on, since they are closed to motorized vehicles. There are many "must see" attractions such as:
- Cadillac
Mountain (where you can be the first person in the US to see the sunrise)
- Thunder Hole
- Sand Beach
- Otter Cliffs
- Jordan Pond
- Somes Sound
... and more. Most can be seen by car, but the real beauty of the island is best seen by hiking-- take casual strolls along the Shore Path in front of historic "cottages" or more strenuous hikes up any of the 18 mountains on the island.
"It's been two years since we last saw Sharon, Perry, and Falke. All I can say is "a vacation is not a vacation, unless you stay at the Black Friar Inn". We have visited six other B&B's in New York, West Virginia, New Hampshire, and Connecticut, at this point, nothing has come close, to the Black Friar Inn!"
"The location is great, right on a quiet side street with zero street noise. You're within walking distance of all Bar Harbor has to offer and a short walk to the Village Green to pick up the impressive/ free Island Explorer Shuttle. The shuttle will take you throughout Mt. Desert Island and all the great spots in Acadia National Park. Our car stayed park by the Friar throughout our visit which was a huge pleasure."

General Information: Gracious. Comfortable. The Black Friar Inn is a uniquely restored Victorian home surrounded by a perennial flower garden. Mantels, bookcases, windows, and finely crafted woodwork from turn- of-the-century "cottages" on Mount Desert Island shape every part of the Inn.
Seven romantic guest rooms are tastefully furnished with period antiques and beautifully decorated. Fine linens dress your queen or king-size bed, soft carpets pamper your feet, and each room has a private bath. Rooms comfortably accommodate one or two people; the suite has a sofa-bed for two more. Sorry- no rollaways or cots. All rooms have:

- individual air conditioners & heaters

"The Black Friar is a funky little B&B; on a side street in Bar Harbor. Built in 1905, the house has plenty of colorful decorative touches, such as the orange and terra-cotta trim and the painted columns near the front door, the several stained-glass panels, and a Italian antique green-glass lamp shaped like a bunch of grapes. The bathrooms echo the Victorian decor, with large old porcelain washbowls, tin ceilings, and dark-wood floors and paneling. There is a warm ambience created by furnishings, mantels, and other woodwork salvaged from Mount Desert Island summer cottages and churches and the Pub Room is especially pleasing with its paneled walls, red-leather benches, fireplace, and wall paintings of monks."
"This is a great bed and breakfast in downtown Bar Harbor. The couple that runs it are very friendly, and tremendously knowledgeable of the town, and the park. They have a great dog also! No smoking, no pets. They will cater to any dietary needs with no problems. Make sure you try the Gingerbread pancakes, they are fantastic! The rooms are fairly small on the third floor but they are priced reasonably, and decorated well. The skylights over the bed are a cool touch for star gazing. Plenty of common area to unwind in. They have a lot of reading material on the local area also (hiking/biking guides, etc.) They also have a recreated English pub within the house! Highly recommended."
"My husband and I had never stayed at a b&b - so we only booked one night in case we didn't like it. This bed and breakfast was the perfect location for us. Clean, perfect hosts, great food, terrific location. A few blocks back from the Main street- a 5 minute walk to the ocean- easy to get out with our car and bikes to get to the National Park. The hosts are perfect too- they have tons of great suggestions for hikes and things to do in the area, without being overbearing. We have since stayed at other B&Bs and been greatly disappointed in them compared to the Black Friar Inn. We think it is the most for your money - without sacrificing any comforts. By the way, we extended our stay from 1 night to 3!!!"
